Winter
12/16/2017 10:48:56 AM
As we have already been hit with snow, there are a few things that you should do and check.
  • Make sure you let your vehicle warm up. This will allow your engine to warm up and then instead of having cold arm blow out of the vents, you will have warm air.
  • Make sure you have an inspection done on your vehicle to ensure it can withstand the winter months, including having working heat.
  • DO NOT DRIVE when your windshield and wind are covered in frost. You may be in a hurry some morning, but it is not worth the risk. Make sure your windows are defrosted or brushed off to have visual around you.
  • When you turn your vehicle off, make sure your window wipers are also turned off. If we get hit with snow, you can damage the wipers when they try to mov but unable to due to the heavy snow. Inaddition, if it gets cold enough, wipers can be damaged as well.

The list is endless of different things one should be careful of over the winter months; just make sure you keep yourself. other drivers, and your family safe.

Happy Holidays!

It’s hard to believe it is that time of year again… HALLOWEEN! Spring and summer flew by again and now we prepare for not only Halloween but Thanksgiving and Christmas. You may go to the store and already see Christmas things hitting the shelves, but don’t stress yet!

During this time, you should get a winter inspection done on your vehicle(s).

You may ask why do I need a winter inspection?

That is a good question. You should have a winter inspection completed because it reduces your risk of going to use you heat when we start to get those cold days or unable to start your vehicle. A few things you should have inspected are the following:

  • Coolant/Antifreeze

  • Tires & Brakes

  • Wipers & Windshield Wiper Fluids

  • Spark Plug Wires

  • Engine Oil

  • Battery (Posts, Cables, etc)

  • Fluids, Hoses, and Filters

Another aspect to have checked is your traction control, you don’t want to hit winter without traction control. This can increase your risk of hitting a ridge or some snow and lose control of your vehicle, there are already risks of hitting black ice.

Don’t Forget to have an Emergency Kit in your vehicle, as well. As mentioned in a previous article(How can you prepare for the winter months in Michigan?), it is advised to keep the following:

  • Blanket(s)

  • Flashlight

  • First Aid Kit

  • Snacks

  • Ice Scraper

  • Water/Drinks

A few other things that were suggested are spare gloves and hats, small shovel, leak-proof coolant, and possibly sand to help get tires unstuck in the snow.

As a final note, if you have new drivers in your family, please make sure they are careful during the winter months and know what to do in all circumstances (black ice, etc).

You may be thinking it is only September, we are just about to hit Fall, and it has been only raining. However, what we may forget at times is we live in Michigan. We can have snow in the middle of summer and get hit with snowstorms in October.

People can prepare for the days they can not get to the store due to the roads by stocking up on some food and other essential supplies. You may have hot chocolate on hand for when you have to shovel/plow or when your children come in from outside. However, are you prepared in the event you break down or need supplies away from home?

Things you should have in your vehicle include:
  • Blanket(s)

  • Flashlight

  • First Aid Kit

  • Snacks
  • Ice Scraper
  • Water/Drinks

You may be wondering why should we have blankets in the vehicle. If you have a blanket or several, in the event you are left without heat in the winter having blankets will help you stay warm while you are waiting. In addition, when you have children with you, make sure you have what they may need (ex: formula and water- if have infant). You can even have a spare set of clothing.

Don’t forget to have your vehicle inspected to ensure it is safe for the harsh weather that can come at any moment.
